This could very well be the Alameda in Burbank. My Father in-law grew up on Flower Street (which intersects Alameda)in the 30's and 40's. That area was predominatley Hisanic. From what he has described, it sounds correct.

I haven't even read "On The Road", but anyone in central LA will tell you:
Alameda Street runs south from Union Station downtown and follows the railroad tracks clear down to San Pedro. It's a very VERY well known street (but not an "Avenue"). It also belongs to the same part of town as Central Avenue, so Jack is probably not talking about the San Fernando Valley (much less travelled then).
It could have possibly been that part of Burbank, which was there in the late 40s, but more likely he meant Alameda stretching from Union station along the Eastern edge of downtown. Little Tokyo was still in the process of regaining its Japanese American community through the late 40s; during the war years and immediately after, it was known as "Bronzeville," and home to a sizeable African-American population. There where a number of very shady jazz joints and bars in the area in the late 40s.
Ironically, the Mexican bar where Madonna shot one of her first videos on First St just East of Alameda was torn down a few years ago.
Many streetcar lines (including the one that went down Central Avenue) went by there. The WPA maquette of Los Angeles circa 1940 shows the area as a mixture of late-19th and early-20th century housing mixed with industry, much of the latter which still remains.
The LA Artists District, born out of the loft boom of the last 25 years, has assured that many of those buildings will be around for a while, but new construction has removed most of the single family dwellings. It is now considered one of the most hip and cosmopolitan parts of the city to live, in quite a contrast to to 50 years ago.

Hi, sorry for my broken english first, i'm from México and i'm reading for second time Kerouac's "On the road", but this time in english, great effort for me, and i'm doing fine, and thanks to sites like this, youtube, wikipedia, and so on, now i can see a little more of Paradise journey.
